Electrical stimulation therapy, or e-stim, was first studied in 1843 when scientists identified electrical currents in nerves and muscles. This breakthrough sparked a deeper understanding of how stimulating the motor unit—which is the motor neuron and the muscle fiber it acts upon—can enhance muscle strength and promote healing.
“The 2019 study goes on to say that when the motor unit activation has a deficit, electrical stimulation can attenuate that deficit and promote muscle strength and healing within the cells of the muscles,” says Dr. Erik Camac.
How We Use the Therapy to Promote Healing
If you’ve never had this therapy before, you may wonder what to expect. We place e-stim pads directly on the muscle belly in a cross pattern for approximately 15 minutes, a time frame that’s been identified as ideal for promoting healing. To further enhance healing, we sometimes apply ice or infrared heat over the e-stim, especially for patients experiencing acute flare-ups.
Who Can Benefit?
Most patients can benefit from e-stim, and the therapy is particularly effective for:
- Acute pain management
- Muscle rehabilitation
- Post-adjustment treatment
- General muscle recovery
It’s important to note, however, that e-stim is contraindicated for those with open wounds, pacemakers, or during pregnancy.
Does e-Stim Hurt?
Many patients wonder if e-stim hurts, and the answer is generally no. During a session, small, controlled electrical pulses target specific muscles or areas, creating a mild tingling sensation that’s usually well-tolerated. While some people might feel a slight muscle twitch or light warmth, we can adjust the intensity to each person’s comfort level.
