Cryotherapy in Christiana and Newark
What is whole-body cryotherapy?
Whole-body cryotherapy (available at our Christiana and Newark offices) replaces traditional ice baths and ice packs as a safe, non-invasive process that briefly exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures in order to promote inflammation reduction, muscle recovery, enhanced athletic performance, anti-aging, weight loss and other health-related goals.
Cryotherapy provides relief for an array of conditions, including stress, insomnia, muscle and joint pain, fibromyalgia and headaches.
Extreme cold has been used to treat inflammation for centuries; that’s the idea behind immersing the body in an ice bath or using ice packs. In 1978, Japan began using cryotherapy to treat rheumatoid arthritis, a concept that spread to Europe, and ultimately inspired the whole-body cryotherapy systems in use today.
For years, professional sports organizations across the globe have incorporated the technology into their training regimes and its growing popularity is now evident in its accessibility to the general public, as seen in the News Journal.

Whole-Body Cryotherapy is Making a Difference for our Patients
How cold does it get?
The nitrogen mist drops the unit’s temperature to a range of -220 F to -274 F, which temporarily lowers the temperature of the skin’s top layer. It will feel coldest during the last 30 seconds of treatment.
Is it safe?
The mist is composed of the same nitrogen that is in the air we breathe. The heavier mist stays inside the chamber while your head remains outside of the chamber, so you’ll be breathing the air in the room. Sessions are constantly monitored and you may request to exit at any time. Prior to your first session, our staff will conduct a health evaluation to clear you for participation.

Many patients feel a difference after just one session!
What can I expect during my session?
- Our friendly staff will review your medical history and our procedures, as well as answer any questions. You will be escorted to a private changing room. You may remain in your underwear, jogging or compression shorts-women may also wear a bra, sports bra or bathing suit (no underwire)
- Jewelry must be removed from the neck down
- You will be provided with a pair of socks, slippers, gloves and a robe.
- Once you’ve stepped into the pre-chilled chamber, you will remove the robe for the duration of the treatment. It will be returned to you upon exiting.
- A cold, dry nitrogen mist will provide even cooling over your entire body. The treatment lasts 3 minutes, with the last 30 seconds feeling the coldest.A technician will constantly monitor your session and will assist you in exiting the chamber when completed.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments you will need depends on the severity of your condition or injury. Many patients feel a difference after the first session, with a noticeable shift after three to five sessions. The most significant benefits are achieved between 10-15 sessions.
What is the best frequency?
If you’re new to whole-body cryotherapy, we recommend easing into a schedule-beginning at a low intensity for three consecutive days and gradually increasing. Seasoned clients may choose to enjoy treatments more frequently-no sooner than four hours, not longer than 48 hours for athletes during training and competition. Many patients prefer one or two sessions per week for maintenance.
