From removing interference in a newborn’s nervous system after birth to helping a school-aged child with bedwetting, chiropractic is incredibly beneficial. It also typically yields a quick response, without medication.

How Chiropractic Can Help Kids

Here are some common childhood conditions that respond well to chiropractic:

  • Balance problems
  • Bedwetting
  • Breastfeeding difficulties
  • Colic
  • Ear infections
  • Pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Headaches
  • Asthma/Allergies

What to Expect

At your first visit to First State Health & Wellness, we’ll ask you to complete some brief paperwork before your child’s visit. When it comes time for the exam, a parent or caregiver will lie on her back, and the baby can lie on top of the adult’s belly.

If your child is nervous, we can give them toy adjusting instruments so they can feel part of the process and play along. With many of the children we see, their parents have been adjusted for a long time, so the kids become familiar with chiropractic care and what it involves.

The chiropractor will perform various checks depending on your child’s age. Here are some things we’ll look for:

Symmetry: We want to ensure the right side behaves like the left side. To do so, we gently palpate the spine. We use about the same amount of pressure to check if a tomato is ripe.

Joint movement: Through palpation, we’ll check the spine to determine if any of those joints are locked. So we check your child’s joints from head to toe to ensure everything is moving properly and without restrictions.

Eye-tracking & reflexes in babies: The chiropractor will pick up your baby to check their eye movements, to see how they respond to their surroundings. While rotating them, we’ll also see how they respond to reflexes on the feet and cheek.

Head check: We also check the back of a baby’s head to make sure there’s no flattening of the skull.

Gait: If your little one is walking, we check their gait to ensure it’s as symmetrical as possible.

For kids under 2, we use instruments to provide light adjustments. We can also use sustained contact with our hands, which is a constant pressure on the joint, but it’s very gentle.

Ear infections: We’ve seen young patients who have been dealing with ear infections for 1-2 two years straight, and nothing has helped. Although antibiotics temporarily help, those merely mask symptoms. The chiropractic adjustment gets to the root cause. Our experience has been that a series of adjustments will clear up the ear infection fairly well.

Crawling difficulties: Some little ones will drag one leg as they crawl, so it’s like they’re scooting. In those cases, the pelvis was stuck in a locked position, which can happen from the birthing process. After getting adjusted, babies can crawl perfectly.

Scoliosis: While chiropractors are unable to straighten your spine completely, they can use a combination of spinal adjustments and flexion-distraction techniques to improve flexibility and range of motion while alleviating much of the pain and working to prevent the curve from getting worse.
