The Importance of Sleep Hygiene and How Chiropractic Care Can Help

Proper Sleep Habits

Proper sleep habits, much like our daily hygiene routines, are known as sleep hygiene. It involves going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.

“Poor sleep habits have been linked to various chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiac problems, obesity, and mental illnesses like depression.” says Dr. Erik Camac of our Rehoboth location.

Why is Sleep Hygiene Important?

Sleep hygiene is crucial for maintaining overall health and well-being. It affects the hypothalamus, which regulates body temperature, mood, hunger, thirst, blood pressure, and sleep. Sufficient sleep is especially important for those with mental illnesses like manic depression.

Tips for Good Sleep Hygiene

To ensure proper sleep hygiene, follow these tips:

  1. Create a sleep-friendly environment: Sleep in a quiet, dark, relaxing space with a comfortable temperature every night.
  2. Turn off electronics: Switch off all electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime to avoid blue light exposure, noise, and distractions.
  3. Avoid certain substances: Stay away from caffeine, large meals, and alcohol close to bedtime. For those with abnormal sleep patterns, consume caffeine no later than 12 noon.
  4. Know your sleep needs: The average adult aged 18-60 needs at least seven hours of sleep per day, whereas those aged 61-64 may require seven to nine hours. After age 75, the necessary sleep reduces to seven to eight hours.
  5. Consider a new mattress: Did you know your mattress can expire? Read more about the importance of a good mattress and our recommended mattress, Saatva

Types of Sleep Difficulties

Some common sleep difficulties include insomnia, sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, and narcolepsy. Each of these conditions can severely impact an individual’s quality of life and overall health.

How Chiropractic Care Can Help with Sleep

Chiropractic care can play a significant role in improving sleep quality. Many people report feeling more relaxed after a chiropractic adjustment. This relaxation can be attributed to the removal of interference between the brain, spinal cord, and the nervous system. Babies, in particular, are known to take long naps after getting adjusted.

“If you’re struggling with sleep difficulties or looking for ways to improve your sleep hygiene, consider seeking chiropractic care. Not only can adjustments help promote relaxation, but we can also offer valuable advice on supplements and lifestyle changes to help you achieve better sleep.” Dr. Eric Camac.
