Finding Your Perfect Sleep Position

sleep painDo you wake up feeling groggy or unrefreshed?

Maybe you rely on multiple cups of coffee to get through the workday. If you could use better, more restorative slumber, it’s worth looking at how you position your body during shut-eye. Recent research has revealed some interesting insights about how sleep position affects our overall well-being.

The Importance of Slumber Positioning

Slumber is your body’s primary recovery mechanism, supporting everything from immune function to neurological health. According to a study in the August 2022 Sensors Journal that examined the relationship between sleep position and sleep quality, the right-sided position is the best one due to the least amount of tossing and turning or waking in the middle of the night. This position showed improved quality and better low-wave REM sleep patterns.

Left-side snoozing ranks as the second-best option, followed by slumbering on your back. Notably, stomach sleeping (prone position) proved least beneficial for quality rest. These findings help explain why some people wake feeling more refreshed than others despite similar sleep duration.

Why Proper Support Is Critical

Your snooze surface plays a crucial role in maintaining proper positioning throughout the night. “A medium firm mattress reduced back discomfort, low back pain, bedridden pain and rising pain,” says Dr. Erik Camac.

In addition, we also recommend the following:

  • Coop® pillows for proper neck alignment
  • Using a pillow between the knees when side sleeping
  • Maintaining neutral spine alignment regardless of position

The relationship between sleep position and quality rest becomes especially important as we age, though our slumber needs typically decrease over time. While the average adult needs 7-8 hours of shut-eye, the quality of those hours matters more than the quantity.
