Healthy Habits to Help Boost Immunity

Runners silhouetteWe understand that the rapid spread of coronavirus (COVID-19) is unsettling for many people. But remember, knowledge is power! At First State Health & Wellness, patient health and safety are our 1st priority. We want to empower our patients, and community, in not only preventing its spread, but making sure you know how to support your immune system now, and for sustained good health.

If left to simply stock up on disinfectant and tissues when viruses arise, we are severely discounting the amazing (natural!) abilities our bodies have to defend and repair when properly supported. We encourage you to take some time to reflect on and address lifestyle habits that may be burdening your system. Removing a few unhealthy habits, while adopting some more supportive ones, such as those listed below, can go a long way in improving your overall health status!

  • Wash hands often with warm, soapy water for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to wash between your fingers, and the backs of your hands (even better if you can clean under your nails!).
  • Eat nutrient-dense fruits and vegetables. Dairy, sugar and processed foods can cause inflammation. If your body must focus on calming added inflammation, it cannot focus on keeping your immune system working at its best potential!
  • Supplement if necessary to fill in the gaps in your nutrition. Zinc, vitamin D and vitamin C are key immune-boosting supplements. Speak to your chiropractor about your unique needs.
  • Avoid smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Nicotine can increase cortisol levels while decreasing the formation of antibodies. Alcohol can disrupt your good gut bacteria, allowing more harmful bacteria to pass into the blood.
  • Sleep Well! Infection-fighting antibodies and cells are reduced during periods of insufficient sleep. Strive for 7-8 hours a night, plus more during times of stress or illness.
  • Detoxify regularly via exercise and frequent hand washing with soap and water. Drink plenty of water (half of your body weight in ounces per day is a good goal. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds you will aspire to drink 75 ounces of water per day)
  • Move your body! Choose an activity you enjoy.
  • Quiet your racing thoughts and worries via meditation and mindfulness! Fear is an immune suppressor. Any stress on the nervous system increases your risk of illness. Unplug and find gratitude in enjoying unstructured ‘play time’ with family and friends.
  • Schedule regular chiropractic, acupuncture and massage care. A well-adjusted spine makes for a calmer nervous system and stronger immunity to illness (and injury!)
